Volleyball Coach- Sheldon Carvalho

Sheldon Carvalho just completed a 20-year volleyball coaching career that started as a student assistant coach at BYU-Hawaii and finished in the Pac 12 for NCAA Division 1 University of Utah. Sheldon said he’s excited to be a consultant for players looking to achieve their goal of playing volleyball in college. With Carvalho’s experience coaching student athletes at different levels, high school to the NCAA Division I, he knows what it takes to achieve their desired university. Furthermore, Carvalho’s strong recruiting network will be a great asset to connect players to college coaches and eventually be recruited.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Carvalho was immersed in one of the most prominent volleyball cultures in the U.S. growing up in a sport-oriented family with six children.

Under the leadership of legendary Head Coach, Beth Launiere, Carvalho was the Volunteer Assistant during The University of Utah’s (Utah) 2019 Sweet 16 run and was an assistant coach and Director of Operations from 2020-2021. During his time at Utah, Carvalho coached six All Americans. In addition, Carvalho was the Assistant Beach Volleyball Coach from 2019-2021.

From 2015-2018, Carvalho, under the tutelage of Hall of Fame Head Coach, Chris Green, led as the indoor Assistant/Associate Head Coach at the University of Alaska (UAA). During Carvalho’s four seasons at UAA, he helped to amass a record of 101-24, received the 2016 AVCA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year award after helping the Seawolves to a program-best 34-3 record, won back-to-back Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles and finished runner-up in the 2016 NCAA Division II National Title Match.

At UAA, Carvalho’s role as the Recruiting Coordinator was the catalyst to  produce the 2016, 2017 and 2018 GNAC Freshmen of the Year and 2017 GNAC Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Carvalho helped coach 11 All-GNAC honorees, five All-Americans and captured the top seed for the NCAA West Regional Championships in two of four campaigns as well as make the post season West Region Championship Tournament in three of four seasons.

Carvalho coached at UAA after serving two seasons as Head Coach of American Leadership Academy, a high school program in Spanish Fork, Utah, where his teams posted top-4 regional finishes and made the Class 2A State Tournament in 2013 and 2014. He also coached at ALA from 2008-09, leading the school to its first-ever appearance at the state level.

Carvalho was the Head Coach at Western Texas College (WTC), a junior college program, from 2010-2012, collecting three consecutive 20-win seasons and a 67-40 overall record. At WTC, his 2011 and 2012 squads were the NJCAA Region V Champions and made appearances at the national tournament. Carvalho coached two All-Americans, four All-Conference players and helped WTC to win it’s first-ever national ranking – reaching as high as No. 11. He was honored as the District E Junior College Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012.

Carvalho took his first head coaching job in 2007 at Kahuku High School in his home state of Hawaii, leading his team to the Inaugural Blue Division Oahu Island Championship and a 14-2 record.

He broke into the coaching profession at Brigham Young-Hawaii University, where he served as a Student Assistant on the Seasiders’ 1996 and 1997 NAIA National Championships, and assisted Hall of Fame Head Coach, Wilfred Navalta, with the 2000, 2004 and 2005 teams that played at the NCAA Div. II level.

As a player, Carvalho lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track in high school, and was selected to the Kauai Interscholastic Federation (KIF) All-Star team in volleyball as an outside hitter. After high school, Carvalho played one season on the men’s club team at BYU-Hawaii. He earned a B.A. in Secondary Math Education from Brigham Young (Utah) University in 2004, a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University in 2008 and is currently pursuing his MBA degree at The University of Utah.  To contact Sheldon call him, or email him at: sheldoncollegesportsprep@gmail.com
