Darren spent 4 years as part of the Gonzaga coaching staff where he assisted in recruiting, and all other aspects of coaching. He also spent seven years as head coach and two additional as assistant coach at Eastern Washington University. Serving as the Eagles’ head coach from 2008 to 2014, Haworth tallied an overall record of 65-52, going 26-14 in Big Sky action. He led EWU to the Big Sky tournament three times, winning the title in 2008. Under his tutelage, 13 Eagles earned All-Conference honors, and he oversaw the first win over a nationally-ranked player in Eastern Washington history in 2011.
Individually, Haworth has helped GU players earn three All-WCC honors. In 2015, Alvaro Nazal earned First Team All-WCC honors for singles play and All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles play, along with partner Nick Kamisar. Kamisar also received Honorable Mention for his singles success. In all, seven players set or equaled career highs in wins during Haworth’s time in Spokane.
His first year on staff was one of the best years in program history. Haworth helped lead the Bulldogs to an 11-11 record, the team’s first season at or over .500 since at least 2000. Also, the Zags advanced in the West Coast Conference Championships for the first time in school history, sweeping Santa Clara 4-0 in the opening round of the tournament, and their three WCC wins set a program record as well.
In 2008–his first year as head coach–Haworth earned Big Sky Coach of the Year honors after leading the Eagles to a 7-1 conference record and their first-ever Big Sky Tournament championship. One year later, Haworth returned EWU to the tournament championship, tallying an 18-9 overall record, the team’s highest-ever win total.
During his two years as an assistant coach at Eastern Washington, Haworth helped the Eagles claim their first-ever winning records in conference play.
Haworth has more experience in tennis than just his time at EWU, however, as he’s also been a head coach at Fresno City College, assistant coach at Linfield College, and a tennis professional at both Visalia Racquet Club and Fig Garden Swim and Tennis Club. He also was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Redlands where he helped the women’s team reach consecutive NCAA Division III Elite Eight appearances and the men’s team achieve top five national rankings in both seasons.
He played collegiate tennis at both College of the Sequoias and Linfield, where he helped the Wildcats win their first-ever Northwest Conference championship.
Haworth graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Linfield and earned a master’s in school counseling at Redlands. In his free time he likes to backpack, surf and travel with his wife Autumn. To contact Coach Haworth or for more info email him at: dhaworthcollegesportsprep@gmail.com
