Coach Cervantes brings a wealth of NCAA collegiate coaching experience at all levels of play spending over two decades on NCAA coaching staffs. Orlando has been a head coach at both the NCAA D1, D2, NAIA and Junior College levels. More recently Coach Cervantes was the Head Coach for NCAA Division 1 Lamar University from 2012-2015. where he guided the team to the 2012 Southland Conference Championship game. Prior to that, Orlando was an Assistant Coach for Power 5 school Indiana University. Prior to his stint at Indiana, Cervantes was an assistant coach in California for Cal Poly, where he helped the Mustangs win a Big West Conference Championship title.
Cervantes also spent some time at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Arizona as the head coach and the school’s sports information director. He spent three years as the head coach for Holy Names University in Oakland leading the team to a pair of top three conference finishes in his first two seasons at the helm.
He got his start in college coaching at UC Santa Cruz in 1996 as an assistant for both the men’s and women’s teams before moving on to his alma mater, San Jose State University, in 1998 as an assistant coach for the men and women’s soccer teams.
Orlando coached two 1st round & one 3rd round draft picks in the Major League Soccer Draft on the men’s side and helped the women’s team qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history and capture a WAC Championship. The men also advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Cervantes, who speaks English and Spanish fluently, also has experience with the United States Olympic Development Program (ODP), where he has been a member of the instructional staff with the California Youth Soccer Association as well as the USYSA ODP – Regions II, III, and IV teams. He has served as the head coach of the California-North State ODP teams and Regional ODP staff’s throughout the country.
Most recently, Coach Cervantes has been the Head Coach at Angelina College in Texas, State Technical Director for Louisiana Soccer and has directed the Gulf South Texans Youth Soccer Club, as well as the Albion Hurricanes FC West program in Houston.
Cervantes graduated with a degree in Sports Management and a minor in Spanish from San Jose State University. He earned a Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. We are excited to have Coach Cervantes joining our team with nearly 30 years of college and club coaching experience under his belt. Orlando will work with both men and women’s players helping to counsel, guide and support them throughout the recruiting process
